2017 Gift Of The Heart – Paulsboro High School
Woodbury, NJ, April 5, 2017
For Immediate Release
The law firm of Hoffman DiMuzio has allocated close to half a million dollars to its “Gift of the Heart” Community Scholarship Foundation. Forty-one graduating seniors from Gloucester and Salem County High Schools have been selected to receive a one thousand dollar scholarship for embodying the service ideals of the program. This week, the 2017 “Gift of the Heart” Hoffman DiMuzio Community Service Foundation recipients are from Paulsboro High School: Haley Mogar and Sam Giordano.
Haley Mogar
A small town harbors the capacity to foster a truly tightknit community. Haley Mogar partially attributes her interest in volunteering to her hometown; with less people, the impact of each individual’s community contribution is often clearer.
When considering how her interest in service developed, Haley looks to a past visit at her local Veterans Home. The rewarding feeling and appreciation that arose from meeting and chatting with veterans demonstrated for her the fulfillment of building a strong sense of community. Community for Haley not only comprises her town, but specifically her school.
As a member of the National Honor Society Haley has participated in numerous community events, including town clean ups, canned food drives, toy drives, and planning a community Christmas party. One of the central tenants of NHS is service; thus members are encouraged to frequently invest their time in volunteering. Haley is also part of the Big Brother Big Sister program, through which she helps ease the often stressful transition to middle school by mentoring an incoming 7th grade student.
Additionally Haley has participated in the A.B.L.E program, volunteers as both the Wrestling and Track team manager, and acts as cheerleading captain.
Good work Haley!
Sam Giordano
While volunteering by its essence offers no official compensation, Sam Giordano finds, like many of our recipients, that donating ones time pays dividends nonetheless. Sam has worked with several community organizations throughout Gloucester County.
With the non-profit Operation Christmas Morning, Sam fundraises and purchases gifts in order to offer support to struggling families during the holidays. The organization exists to ensure that, regardless of their circumstances, kids will receive toys on Christmas morning.
For the past two years, Sam has also worked to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald house of Philadelphia, an organization that supports the families of seriously ill children. In school, Sam is a member of Paulsboro’s Big Brother Big Sister program, that matches mentors with incoming seventh grade students. Additionally, every year Sam participates in a walk-a-thon for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He raises money and awareness for JDFR to further support their search for a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Sam is vice president of the national honor society, president of his class, and is a dedicated member of the wrestling team. Thank you for your volunteer work Sam!
Congratulations are extended to Haley Mogar and Sam Giordano as well as their proud family and friends! Their community service embodies a Gift of the Heart.
Next week’s featured recipients will be from Penns Grove High School.
