2018 Gift Of The Heart – Delsea Regional High School
The law firm of Hoffman DiMuzio has allocated close to half a million dollars to its Gift of the Heart Community Scholarship Foundation. Forty-nine graduating seniors from Gloucester, Cumberland, and Salem County High Schools have been selected to receive a one thousand dollar scholarship for embodying the service ideals of the program. This week, the 2018 Gift of the Heart Hoffman DiMuzio Community Service Foundation recipients are from Delsea Regional High School: Shawn Rehman and Brianna Waller.
Shawn Rehman
For Shawn Rehman, giving back to his school and community is critical; he explains that these entities have afforded him the opportunity to be successful. Through service, he hopes to continue this community tradition of aiding future students in achieving their goals.
Of all the available means by which volunteer work is accessible, Shawn considers Army JROTC to be his most significant commitment. As a participant in the program for the past four years, Shawn has supported many projects and events for the community. He lists football game parking, toys for tots campaigns and trash clean ups as a few of the many areas in which JROTC helps community members.
Additionally, Shawn is a member of the National Honor Society. With NHS, Shawn tutors students twice a week in needed subjects, and has helped to wrap gifts for sponsored children during the holidays. Shawn is also a member of Renaissance club, an organization that plans school events such as a car show, fundraisers and a people’s choice award. He intends to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Great work Shawn!
Brianna Waller
Some of Brianna Walker’s most treasured memories from high school have arisen from volunteer work. Through her experiences, she has come to believe that the simplest of actions can carry a world of meeting.
With various organizations, Brianna has sold lemonade at her high school Food Truck Festival, collected garbage off the roadside, helped with booths at Franklinville Day and even volunteered to help out with performers’ hair the night of the school play. The SHAPE program, which stands for School and Home Achievement with a Partnership for Education, has been a part of Brianna’s community service since her freshman year. SHAPE lasts for one month every summer, and aims to help ease the transition for Middle schoolers into the next grade.
Brianna volunteered specifically in a seventh grade math section. Her role as a teacher’s helper led her to assist with the lessons and support the classroom with whatever miscellaneous tasks were needed for the day. Brianna explains that one of the highlights of this program has been the opportunity it creates to forge a connection with the younger students. In addition to SHAPE, Brianna is involved with NHS, student government, cheerleading, Glamour Gals, and the Renaissance program. She intends to pursue a degree in nursing. Thank you for your community service Brianna!
Sincere congratulations are extended to Delsea students Shawn Rehman and Brianna Waller, as well as to their proud parents, family and friends! Next week, the featured Gift of the Heart recipients will be from Kingsway High School.
