2018 Gift Of The Heart – Woodbury High School
The law firm of Hoffman DiMuzio has allocated close to half a million dollars to its Gift of the Heart Community Scholarship Foundation. Forty-nine graduating seniors from Gloucester, Cumberland, and Salem County High Schools have been selected to receive a one thousand dollar scholarship for embodying the service ideals of the program. This week, the 2018 Gift of the Heart Hoffman DiMuzio Community Service Foundation recipients are from Woodbury High School: Morgan Kersey and Christopher Guy.
Morgan Kersey
For Morgan Kersey, volunteering has provided not only an opportunity to give back to her community but a means to utilize her artistic talents.
Morgan often performs at school events, singing both classics and original pieces. She cites her work for Black History Month as a particularly moving experience, when she sang a song for school alumni. At another event, she wrote and read a poem dedicated to past major figures in the Civil Rights movement. For MLK Day, Morgan accompanied a friend to sing at the Woodbury Muse. These opportunities to perform have allowed her to both practice her passion, and engage in a wonderful service for her school.
Face painting is another way Morgan has practiced community service. For both a Mayfair event at a local elementary school and the opening of a YMCA community garden, she set up a stand for kids to receive various face painting designs. Previously, Morgan also has helped to support a veteran’s commemoration ceremony at her school. When describing these experiences, she explains, “volunteering helped to make me grow as a person.” Keep up the amazing service, Morgan!
Christopher Guy
Of all the various ways Christopher Guy volunteers in his community, Eagle Scouts has proven to be one of his favorites.
With his troop, Christopher participates in Memorial Day parades, Veteran’s Day services, and candle light vigils. Other scout projects have also included community cleanups. Christopher additionally has served as Vice President of Programs, and then President, for the Venturing Officers Association. Venturing is a co-ed program within Boy Scouts of America. Through these positions, he helped plan and run Venturing activities. He also is a member of the scouting honor society, the Order of the Arrow. One day Christopher hopes to become a scoutmaster, to provide for the next generation the same positive impact that he gained from scouting.
In addition to Eagle Scouts, Christopher volunteers for the Gator Youth Wrestling team. He occasionally provides coaching, and helps members learn about not only wrestling, but canoeing and lifting as well. Christopher intends on continuing his service by becoming a police officer, and a U.S. Naval sailor. Thank you for your volunteer work, Christopher!
Sincere congratulations are extended to Woodbury High School recipients Morgan Kersey and Christopher Guy as well as to their proud parents, family and friends! Next week, the featured Gift of the Heart recipients will be from Our Lady of Mercy Academy.
